“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.””
1 Samuel 16:7 NLT
In the word of social media, it seems as if everyone is fighting to be seen. To make matters worse, there is a plethora of ways to do so. Anyone can have a platform to say and do whatever they feel. It’s ironic that with so many avenues to put yourself out there, we can still feel overlooked. We can feel as though we’re just another story, or just another face, in a sea of stories and faces.
It doesn’t help that we tend to value the things that aren’t important. We tend to value what is seen versus what is unseen. We will honor those who are talented versus those who are disciplined. Beauty versus character. Gifting versus anointing, etc.
Being someone who is extremely introverted and soft spoken, I’ve battled the feeling of invisibility for a long time. I believed that my presence wasn’t needed and my absence wasn’t felt. I’ve wondered if my story mattered, or if anyone actually listened when I spoke. My consolation has always been serving a God who I’ve never had to question if He sees me or not. He’s seen every tear, every failure, every victory: everything that no one else sees.
If you feel overlooked, I want to challenge you. Who are you fighting to be seen by? “The God who sees” is aware of and sees YOU. He is not looking at your appearance or any of the vain things that man looks at. He’s looking at your heart. You have not been overlooked by Him and he has not forgotten you. Have you forgotten Him? Focus on what matters. What matters is having a heart that is pleasing to God. Live your life for the audience of One.
I want to encourage you. Being overlooked by man puts you in good company. David wasn‘t even considered initially to be the next king by his own father. That didn’t matter, because the Lord had already chosen him. God will get you to where he wants you, just be found faithful doing what he told you to do. Even if you feel like everyone else is already doing it, no one has your story, with your set of gifts, with your experience with God. There is someone who needs to hear your testimony, hear your song, read your book, see your art, or whatever it is God has given you.
I pray that you reset your focus and that you live from a place of being seen by your Heavenly Father, so that you’re not fighting to be seen by man. 🤍
